A fine portrait of a great man. I have seen the original in Down House, Darwin's retreat in Kent. It hangs over the stair case, and I stood for some time on the stairs gazing at it, it is that compelling as a portrait. To anyone who can get there, I seriously recommend a tour of Down House - it is fascinating - Darwin's study is surprisingly small, but crammed full of his equipment. English Heritage, who run the place, provide an audio tour narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Does it get much better?
